Alaska Fishing in June

Peak first run of Sockeye Salmon, Peak first run of King Salmon and trophy Rainbow Trout on the Kenai River, what could be better than the month of June for fishing in Alaska?!

Alaska Fishing in June

Rainbow Trout fishing from the opener on June 11th all the way through the end of the month can be quite good. Rainbows are moving off of their April and May spawning beds and into the main feeding channels of the Kenai River.

Trout this time of year really love to eat sculpin, leeches and other small fish. We mainly swing flies as well as dead drift egg patterns and flesh patterns for Rainbow Trout in June. We offer both fly fishing and spin fishing this time of year for Rainbow Trout.

It wouldn’t be fishing in Alaska without mentioning King Salmon, the most prized fish in Alaska and Alaska’s State fish. The first run of King Salmon or Chinook Salmon hit their peak in mid to late June.

Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC targets King Salmon on the Kasilof River, a drift boat-friendly fishery with no motor boats allowed during the first or second run of fish. This late May and June run of fish is comprised of both hatchery fish as well as wild fish.

June also brings one of the most popular game fish in all of Alaska, the Sockeye Salmon into the Kenai River. The first run of Sockeye brings on one of the best times to fish in Alaska. Sockeye are almost exclusively headed to the Russian River in Cooper Landing during this time. Where the Russian River meets the Kenai River and the confluence near Sportsman’s Landing, you’ll find the “Combat Fishing Zone.”

The Combat Fishing Zone is famous for not only the large number of fish that return to the Russian River (upwards of 50,000 Sockeye Salmon), but also the number of anglers that line the shores of the confluence of the Russian River and Kenai River.

The best fishing in June in Alaska starts around the 1st when the first run of King Salmon begin to show up in bigger numbers in the rivers and June 11th when the first run of Sockeye Salmon arrive at the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers in Cooper Landing. Some of the best Rainbow Trout fishing in June is right around the 11th when trout are starting to come off of their spawn and feed heavily. The odds of landing a big fish this time of year is pretty good. June is also when Ocean fishing is already starting to peak.

June in Alaska is also a great time for a saltwater fishing charter out of Seward, Homer or Whittier. Fishing in June in Alaska on the ocean means peak Halibut, Great Rock Fish fishing and the start of some good Salmon Fishing as well.

June fishing in Alaska also brings on some of the better small stream and tributary fishing, especially on the Kenai Peninsula. The Russian River comes alive in June and so does Quartz Creek in Cooper Landing, AK. Lower Peninsula Rivers like the Kasilof River also start to show life as the first run of King Salmon have started to make their way up and the hold-over Steelhead begin their out-migration back to the ocean after spawning in late-May into early June.
