BLACK DEATH ALASKA TROUT SPEY FLY
Imitating either a leech, sculpin or young salmon/trout, the Black Death is a very effective trout spey streamer meant to be swung or dead-drifted. This truly Alaskan fly gives the perfect silhouette on dark and cloudy days. With a small profile and the appearance of pectoral fins, the lifelike movement of the Black Death will trigger some seriously aggressive takes from some hungry Rainbow Trout! frag'L Rick ALASKA TROUT SPEY FLY
Whether imitating a young salmon, trout or sculpin, this trout spey pattern is tied in proven fish catching brown. With dancing rubber legs and a hint of flash in the under-belly, the Frag'l Rick will simply get the job done! Kenai River Head Fishing Guide Dave uses this fly daily with clients while skagit fishing.
The Big Wazowski ALASKAN STREAMER
Green and mean, The Big Wazowski is known to fool some pretty big and very aggressive Rainbows and Dolly Varden. Also known to take silvers, grayling and lake trout, green is an awesome color, especially when mixed with a little flash and rubber legs!

DAVE’S Meat biscuit ALASKA FLESH FLY
A formidable and delectable morsel of salmon flesh. Dead drifting this rainbow trout and dolly varden pattern after salmon have decayed a little, is a sure way to get a tug on your line! The Meat Biscuit is designed to mimic the exact color and movement of a smaller chunk of salmon flesh drifting through the water. Head Kenai River Guide Dave swears by this pattern as a go-to for rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River!
DAVE’S WHITE WIDOW ALASKAN STREAMER
Far and away one of the best fly patterns for swinging on the Kenai River! We love this White Intruder Fly for Trout. With lots of life-like movement and the colors of dead, rotting flesh, this fly has a special place in our fly boxes! If you’ve ever rainbow trout fished in Alaska, you know white is a very good color to use! This is a very similar fly to the White Death Fly. VIDEO LINK TO THIS FLY!

ALASKA Hashtag sculpin FLY
You might as well be fishing with a living sculpin! The #Sculpin dances and flutters like a real sculpin. Fish on the Kenai River have literally hit this fly so hard, they've snapped the leader! This fly, tied on either a tube or an intruder shank, will deliver almost any time of the year, especially if you are spey fishing for trout.

Dave’s Panic button ALASKA FLY
A very solid young trout or salmon imitation fly that is deadly on the Kenai River. Dave’s Panic Button is a perfect swinging fly for skagit casting! Tied with rubber legs and a hint of flash, the slim profile and lifelike movement lets big Rainbow Trout know that Dave’s Panic Button is frantically trying to swim to the safety of the near bank. Unfortunately, Dave’s Panic Button won't make it very far without a big tug from a hungry trout! --> HOW TO TIE DAVE’S PANIC BUTTON!

Micro Intruder Fly Patterns
Dave’s Trout Spey Intruder
Dave’s Trout Spey Intruder is designed after very popular steelhead intruders and can be tied either weighted or unweighted. This fly, tied with rubber legs and spey hackles, has the perfect profile and is a great fly for trout spey swinging in low and clear situations. Fly tying spey flies is one of our major passions. This one is a lot of fun to tie! --> HOW TO TIE DAVE’S TROUT SPEY INTRUDER!
SCOTT hOWELL’S sQUIDRO fLY (DAVE’S TROUT SPEY VERSION)
Scott Howell’s Squidro Fly is one of the most recognizable steelhead fly patterns around the world. Dave has modified Scott’s pattern to be a “single-stage,” scaled-down version of the famous fly. Dave’s version of the Squidro Fly is appropriate for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden fishing here in Alaska and is an excellent fly for skagit fishing! HOW TO TIE THE TROUT SPEY SQUIDRO FLY!
ALASKA TROUT SPEY INTRUDER
Spey Hackles Fly Tying at its finest in this Micro Trout Intruder. Trout Spey Intruders are excellent flies to use in Alaska, especially during the times of year when Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden aren’t heavily feeding on salmon eggs or salmon flesh. Swinging these smaller intruders on spey rods works well most of the year in Alaska.

must-have flies for alaska
DRY FLIES FOR ALASKA trout
Dry Flies like Elk Hair Caddis, Green Drakes, Parachute Adams, Stimulators and other more traditional trout dry flies work really well in Alaska for Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Grayling. These flies can be fished a bit bigger than you may be used to - sizes 8, 10 and 12 are quite common on our rivers and lakes.
NYMPH FLIES FOR ALASKA trout
Just like their dry fly counterparts, traditional trout nymphs work really well for Alaskan Trout. Nymphs like Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Stonefly patterns and Hare’s Ear nymphs are great choices for our trout. Fly anglers can get away with using larger-than-normal patterns here as well. Nymphs in size 6, 8, 10 & 12 work great in Alaska for Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Grayling.
streamer flies for alaska trout and salmon
Woolly Buggers, Sculpin patterns, String Leechs, Hairball Leechs, Prom Dresses, Intruders, Dolly Llamas etc.. work really well for both salmon and trout in Alaska. We love the classic Intruder Fly for Salmon and Trout in Alaska. Spey Marabou flies are excellent for Silver Salmon as well as Rainbow Trout (in a variety of colors).
More subdued colors in these patterns like black, green, brown, olive and white work best on trout, while colors like pink & chartreuse work great for King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Chum Salmon and Pink Salmon. Coho Salmon Fly Patterns are usually weighted and flashy.
FLESH FLIES
Flies that imitate salmon flesh like Articulated Flesh, Cotton Candy, Sucker Spawn, Micro Flesh, etc… in a variety of colors and sizes are ideal for trout fishing most days of the year. Smaller, more washed out patterns are great during the winter, spring and summer before salmon spawn and die. Similarly, during the heart of Sockeye Salmon runs when anglers are cleaning and discarding salmon carcasses, you’ll want to “match the hatch” by using more bright orange, red and pink flesh fly colors.
mouse fly patterns for alaska
“Mousing” in Alaska is generally reserved for shallower, clearer and warmer streams during the months of June, July and early August when Rainbow Trout and Char/Dolly Varden are at their most active in the warm waters prior to salmon spawning. Fly patterns like Deer Hair Mice, Morrish Mouse and Nick’s Cheeky Mouse are excellent mouse flies for Alaska.
Bead fishing in Alaska
Although not technically flies, plastic beads work great year-round for trout. These beads come in a variety of sizes and colors to mimic salmon eggs of various species of salmon at different stages of “decay.” Beads in 6 mil, 8 mil and 10 mil generally cover the spectrum of sizes for real salmon eggs. Washed out beads work great year-round, but if salmon are present and actively spawning, you will want to use much fresher looking beads in nearly the exact size and color of the eggs female salmon are depositing.
