king salmon (chinook)

King salmon fisherman flock to the Kenai River annually. Our fisherman practice catch and release only for Kings per our policy at Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC. Similarly, all wild king salmon on the Kasilof River are also Catch and Release.

Kenai River King Salmon have been known to reach the 50, 60, 70lb and up weight classes over the years. Kasilof River King Salmon average between 15-35 lbs with some kings in the 50-60lb range.

We offer both Fly Fishing and conventional fishing techniques for salmon fisherman on our trips.

SILVER SALMON (COHO)

Silver Salmon or Coho Salmon have gained fame over the years as one of the most fun salmon fisherman trips you can take.

Silver salmon fishing in Alaska can be fast-paced and exciting as Coho will hit flies, spinners, plugs and bait. Silvers can reach up to 20 lbs and they are a great catch and release species as well as great table fare if you decide to keep them.

Fisherman on trips for Silvers often chase other species on combo trips like Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden that are generally feeding heavily when Silver Salmon are present.

Saltwater fishing for Coho Salmon can be amazing in July and August.

SOCKEYE SALMON (RED)

When salmon fisherman think salmon fishing in Alaska, they think about fishing for Sockeye Salmon on the Russian River, Kenai River and Kasilof Rivers on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.

Salmon fisherman love Sockeye Salmon as they are prized for their taste as well as the sheer power these fish have. They are known for knuckle-busting and gear-busting battles that will test even the most seasoned fisherman.

Sockeye come in two distinct runs to the Kenai. The first run begins in May and early June and usually peaks around the 3rd week of June. The second run can pile into the river in the tens of thousands in mid-July, making fishing for Sockeye the most popular Salmon fishing in Alaska.

pink salmon (Humpy)

Pinks, better known as humpies or humpback salmon enter the Kenai River in even numbered years. Averaging between 4-10lbs, Pinks aren’t as popular of a fish for the table as other salmon species, especially once they’ve entered the river.

They are great for young salmon fisherman, beginner fly anglers or anyone looking to catch lots of aggressive fish.

Pinks enter the river during the 3rd week of August and their sheer numbers are incredible. They can literally line the bottom of the river. When they spawn, they trigger a feeding-frenzy amongst the Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden, often bringing out some of the biggest trophy fish of the year!
