ALASKA FISHING IN AUGUST
The first week or so of August is typically the end of the second run of Sockeye Salmon. There are still a few chrome fish around to be caught, but be prepared to deal with fish that have turned red and are inedible.
Mid-August is the time when action really starts to heat up along many stretches of the Kenai River. Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon) start to move into the Kenai River in greater numbers. King Salmon have begun their spawning ritual and eager Rainbow Trout have congregated around the King Salmon to gorge on their eggs, offering excellent opportunities to fish for Trophy-Class Rainbow Trout.
A variety of options are available to the adventurous angler this time of year. One day, you could dry fly fish for Rainbow Trout on the Upper Kenai in Cooper Landing, the next day you could cast and retrieve streamers for Silver Salmon near Sterling and the following day you could be drifting painted beads over King Salmon spawning areas in Cooper Landing, Sterling or Soldotna in search of behemoth Rainbow Trout.
The peak time for fishing for Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon) in the ocean is definitely through the month of August. Large runs of Silver Salmon begin to make their migrations into fresh water in early August and will usually be available through September. Halibut fishing can still be pretty good in August with the peak season around the first two weeks of August.
The best fishing in August in Alaska starts around the 15th , when more and more Silver Salmon start to make their way up the Kenai River. The Sockeye Salmon can still be very good during the earliest parts of August, but we stop fishing for them around the 10th or so. Great Rainbow Trout fishing in August can be done with dry flies, streamers, drifting beads and flesh flies. Flesh flies are particularly effective in early August. Later in August, the overall best time to fish in Alaska for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden begins in during the last week when Sockeye Salmon and Pink Salmon (even years), begin to spawn. Salmon eggs bring lots of food for trout and the trout fishing just gets better and better!
