There are lots of small tributaries, especially those of the Kenai River where it is illegal to target, remove from water and harvest Pacific Salmon. A great cheap trip involves fishing in Alaska on the roadside streams of the Kenai Peninsula. The streams and rivers around the Susitna River drainage are also great DIY trips. These rivers and lakes are also for bear viewing and other Alaskan adventures.

Lake Fishing Trips in Alaska is something a lot of anglers don’t think about when planning an Alaska fishing getaway. Alaska has thousands of lakes with lots and lots of game fish. Some lakes in Alaska have these fish species:

Conventional Fishing CHARTERS in alaska

Most anglers are comfortable with “conventional fishing methods.” These methods include:

• Casting spinners with a spinning rod

• Using bait under a bobber

• Back-trolling with casting rods

Deep Sea fishing in Trips in Alaska will use shorter “halibut” and salmon rods. These rods are for trolling or dropping bait to the bottom. Large level-wind reels and short bait casting rods are the norm here.

HARVESTING FISH VS. CATCH AND RELEASE FOR ALASKA FISHING:
WHAT FISH CAN YOU KEEP IN ALASKA?

A lot of anglers overlook what species of fish are available for harvest and which species are legally or ethically catch and release only. It is very important to follow Alaska Fish and Game Laws. Local ethics are important when it comes to fishing and harvesting fish in Alaska. Some species just aren’t normally harvested. Even though the regulations allow for harvest.

Most Salmon Species have harvest seasons and should be harvested ethically at their peak of freshness. Harvesting aged or older spawning salmon takes salmon off of the spawning beds. It also may result in harvesting inedible fish. This wastes a valuable resource. Alaska Fishing for Trout species like Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic Char and Grayling will have seasons for harvest on rivers, lakes and streams. However, in areas where they are wild (like here on the Kenai River), locals refuse to harvest them. It is frowned-upon to harvest them. The Kenai River is not stocked and wild stocks of fish are rare in today’s world. They are also highly valuable to the fishery and the local economy. Trophy fish are valued, so catch and release is advised.

If anglers wish to ethically harvest Salmon, Halibut and Rock Fish when they are fresh, guides and fishing charters will fillet them for you. There are local services that will process fish. They will portion, vacuum seal, deep freeze and ship them to your house.

Even if you are on a DIY trip or fish with a guide, you will still need to consider lodging and accommodations. Most towns in Alaska, like Cooper Landing, offer a variety of Alaska Fishing options for travelers.

A popular way to visit Alaska is to rent a motor home or RV through Great Alaskan Holidays. Recreation vehicles offer many advantages for your Alaska Fishing Vacation. RV’s allow you to move around the state from location to location. Renting an RV means you don’t have to worry about reservations or last minute changes to your trip.

Another popular way to visit Alaska is to rent a vehicle at Ted Stevens International Airport. Anglers can drive to towns like Cooper Landing and Seward for fishing. They can rent camp sites, hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts or vacation rentals. Most fishing destinations are 1-2 hours outside of Anchorage. Some guides and charter services can not offer pick-up and drop-off services.

Prices for Alaska fishing charters range from $300/per day to $400-500. This excludes car rental fees. It also excludes meals and misc. expenses.

Alaska LODGE Trip PACKAGES

Some Fishing Lodges in Alaska can be found on the road system. Many lodges found here on the Kenai Peninsula on the Kenai River or Kasilof River are on the road system. Others are more remote lodges found in the watersheds of Bristol Bay in western Alaska. These are known as Alaska Fly-out fishing lodges.

Most fishing lodges in Alaska are full-service, all-inclusive lodges. Lodges come with all the equipment you’ll need for fishing. They have great accommodations, food, guided fishing, bear viewing and in some cases, fly-out fishing. You will be responsible to cover flights to and from the lodge, gratuities and other costs. Typical lodge packages range from the 3-7 days. Most lodges requiring at least a week-long stay.

Fishing amenities at lodges can be 5-star or rustic. Some Alaskan lodges are remote tent camps using wall tents. This can be a very rustic and pristine experience.
